Veer Zaara - Film

Veer-Zaara (Devanagari: वीर-ज़ारा, Nastaliq: ویر زارا) is a 2004 film directed by Yash Chopra. It is a romance set against the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan. The movie stars Shahrukh Khan as Veer, Preity Zinta as Zaara and Rani Mukerji. The dialogues were written by Aditya Chopra. Yash Chopra returned to directing after eight years, his last directed film being Dil To Pagal Hai (1997).

Saamiya Siddiqui (Rani Mukerji) is an idealistic Pakistani lawyer, whose mission in life is to pave the path for women's empowerment. Her late father who also fought for human rights is her inspiration. But to dissuade females from entering the field of law, and keep the profession restricted to males, the first case Saamiya has been given is that of Prisoner #786 (Shahrukh Khan), a case most people consider impossible to win. Prisoner #786 is a man who has been sitting in prison, without speaking a single word for the past 22 years. The fact that a (Hindu) prisoner has been assigned this holy (Islamic) number convinces Saamiya that God has chosen Veer for some special purpose beyond wasting away in his Lahore, Pakistan prison cell, and she becomes determined to exonerate him, and restore his name, his identity, and country.

Who is Prisoner #786? Why has he been sitting silently in a Pakistani jail for 22 years? The questions are answered as the powerful and gripping story unfolds through flashback stories told by Prisoner #786 from his prison cell.

Squadron Leader Veer Pratap Singh is a young, handsome village boy, now a brave rescue pilot for the Indian Air Force who's devoted his life to saving others. Everyday, he risks his safety and puts his life on the line to rescue people in need.

Meanwhile, in Pakistan, Zaara Hayaat Khan (Preity Zinta) is an independent, carefree, and sprightly young girl, who is about to be engaged, when she learns that her beloved "Bebe" (which generally means mother/grandmother, but in this context, means childhood nanny) is seriously ill, and does not have much longer to live.

Before dying, "Bebe" (Zohra Sehgal) begs Zaara to fulfill her final wish - to take her ashes to India, to the holy Sikh city of Kiritpur, and scatter her ashes in the river there, among her ancestors.

Unable to accept that her beloved "Bebe" is really on her deathbed, Zaara initially refuses. But when Bebe dies a couple minutes later, Zaara decides to carry out Bebe's dying wish. It is a decision that will permanently and irrevocably alter the track of not only her life, but will change the course for others as well.

While en route to India, Zaara's bus gets into an accident, and overturns, toppling over the edge of a twisting mountain road. Zaara and the other passengers are all rescued by the Indian Air Force. That's when Squadron Leader Veer Pratap Singh, and Zaara Hayaat Khan come face-to-face, and neither of their lives are ever the same!
